Case Study: Richmond rugby
An Interview with Laura Martin - Minis Chair
1. What inspired Richmond Rugby to get involved with Rugby Books 4 Kids?
As a novel way to engage with young children in rugby and to inspire and encourage them on their rugby journey here with us at RFC. The club has never done anything like this before, and as the first female Minis Chair here and mum, I was keen to try something new to attract and engage our youngest players! The mission was to send the books into local preschools, primary school years, and to sell them at the Club. The stickers are a way to incentivise children to come along to the sessions- collect stickers and create a poster scene.
2. What were the goals you wanted to achieve by engaging with Rugby Books 4 Kids?
The main aim was to engage our youngest players (Under 5-6s) and to provide a fun incentive each week at their sessions (stickers) and as a great way to get our club into the lives of people. Nobody throws a nice book away, but flyers get easily discarded, and emails missed.
“Nobody throws a nice book away, but flyers get easily discarded, and emails missed.”
3. Can you briefly describe the scope of the project — what was involved from your side and ours?
A bespoke Richmond Rugby version of the My First Rugby Book, paperback. Bespoke stickers with the characters in RFC kit and poster design.
Kurt worked with us to design these.
4. Did you feel your input or the club’s identity/values was respected and reflected in the project?
Yes, definitely. From the colours and design, to the club values and foreword, Kurt is very respectful and his desire to help rugby clubs shines through.
5. What stood out to you about the way the project was managed or delivered?
The dedication and support from Kurt (he was also very patient whilst waiting for info from our side!)
6. How have the players, parents, or coaches responded to the books, posters and stickers?
The coaches are really on board with this and happily hand them out each week. We sell our books in the clubhouse, and we always let people know they are there. Many of our parents and coaches have got one of these books now across our u5/u6 and preschool rugby groups.
Both parents and children have responded really well to the products- they are fun and appealing, and also, I am told the book helps parents understand different rugby terms too! Which is always a bonus.
7. What kind of impact have the books had on the children’s engagement with rugby or reading?
Have you noticed a change in how the kids talk about rugby since engaging with the book, stickers, or posters?
Very positive. They recognise some of the different terms now and can feel familiar with the actions the characters are doing (pass, kick etc).
The children are always very excited to collect their new sticker each week for their poster.
8. If you were to recommend Rugby Books 4 Kids to another club, what would you say?
I would say absolutely give it a go. Rugby for kids is a great thing, and having something like this is only going to help engage them further, especially with your own club colours that the children can relate to and to help market your club to the younger audience.
9. Is there anything else you’d like to share about your experience?
Just a big thank you to Kurt, really. For everything- ongoing support and always helpful with ideas, organising everything and getting it all done on time!!
